GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers pose as bail bondsmen or law enforcement officers to trick families into paying fake bond fees.

In a press release, Sheriff Danny H. Rogers said scammers are contacting relatives or friends of recently arrested individuals, claiming money can be sent to secure a person’s release from jail. The calls often come before the arrestee’s first court appearance, giving victims little time to verify the information.

After victims send the payment, they typically arrive at the jail expecting their loved one to be released — only to find out they’ve been scammed, according to the sheriff’s office.
