RIVERDALE — Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services launched its pre-hospital whole blood transfusion program Wednesday, allowing paramedics to carry and administer whole blood to critically-injured patients suffering from severe blood loss.

It’s a major advancement in EMS care in Clayton County, Fire Chief Tim Sweat said.
“This program represents a new era in life-saving treatment for patients suffering from traumatic injuries or severe bullet loss,” Sweat said at an Oct. 1 press conference at Southern Regional Medical Center. “Every second counts by providing whole blood directly at the scene or a route to the hospital. Our paramedics now have the ability to begin critical transfusions
