Police in Gary, Indiana, were investigating after a 9-year-old boy was fatally shot on Saturday night, authorities said.
The shooting occurred before 6:29 p.m. at a residence along Madison Street near West 4th Avenue, where officers initially responded to a 911 hang-up call, police said in a news release. Before they arrived, Gary police received a call from Methodist Northlake Hospital about a 9-year-old who had been shot in the area and brought to the hospital by a relative, authorities said.
The child was later pronounced dead from his injuries at the hospital. What led up to the shooting wasn't immediately clear as of Sunday evening.
Following the incident, officers secured a crime scene and began an investigation into what transpired.
