Shattered glass and bullet hole-riddled windows remain as a reminder of a terrifying late-night shooting spree during which bystanders, cars and police were fired on up to 100 times.

The shots were fired apparently at random, during a near-two-hour standoff on Sunday night at Croydon Park, in Sydney's inner west, before a 60-year-old man was taken into custody.

Streets were closed and the area was locked down after reports that bullets were indiscriminately being fired at traffic, including police cars, travelling along a local thoroughfare.

Tactical officers later arrested the man after storming a unit above a shop on the busy road.

He is yet to be charged and remains under police guard at Bankstown Hospital after being injured during his arrest.
