PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Kyrene School District announced a modification to the long-range planning committee’s proposal, which could potentially close down nine schools due to declining enrollment.

The revised proposal, which would remove Kyrene Del Norte and Kyrene De La Mirada from the list of closures, was presented during a board retreat on Sept. 29. The new proposal also included an updated implementation timeline.

The district is built to serve 20,000 students, but only has 12,000 enrolled and is expected to continue to drop in the years to come. That dropping enrollment, along with funding concerns, is the reason the district says something has to be done, which in this case could mean school closures.
