Residents of a Melbourne street located near train tracks claim the new level crossing bells are so loud, they can't sleep or hear themselves think.

Metro Trains Melbourne recently upgraded the alarm bells on a level crossing in Ramsden Street in Clifton Hill in the city's inner-north.

But locals say the pitch is now unbearable.

Philip Kim moved into his home just weeks ago and he told 9News the sound of the bells is impacting his sleep.

"It is really annoying. Sometimes I'm driving way away from here and then I can hear it in my ears and I'm like, 'oh no, I'm having PTSD'," Kim said.

"Since they put in this new system, it's got significantly louder... to what we believe is unreasonable," fellow resident Thomas Krousty added.
