A Canberra motorcyclist has died after losing control and colliding with a tree near Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.

The crash happened on Tidbinbilla Road near the Point Hut Road intersection at around midday.

ACT Policing Detective Inspector Mark Steel said a police officer undertaking a regular patrol in the area observed a group of four motorcyclists allegedly speeding just before the accident.

"A short time later, one of those motorcyclists left the road, failed to navigate a bend and unfortunately collided with a tree," he told reporters at the scene.

" The police officer arrived on scene and along with the three colleagues of the motorcyclist commenced CPR. "

The 57-year-old male rider from Canberra died at the scene.

The group of riders are believed to be friends.
