The city of Statesville's new ordinance to regulate solicitation within city limits went into effect Oct. 1, meaning people must pay $50 for the permit to sell or panhandle, or face fines.

The city approved the ordinance unanimously in August.

“These updates give the Statesville Police Department the tools to verify who is soliciting, respond quickly to complaints, and ensure both residents and legitimate businesses are protected,” Statesville Police Chief David Onley said.

A press release from the city said the ordinance regulates solicitors, peddlers and panhandlers. The regulations are designed for public safety, to protect private property rights, and provide transparency for residents when individuals are selling goods or requesting donations in the city.
