NOGALES, Ariz. — The co-owner of a daycare where dozens of children died in a fire in 2009 has been deported to Mexico to face charges.
Sandra Lucia Tellez-Nieves, 51, was arrested in Tucson earlier this year by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a warrant had been issued for her arrest in 2022, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Tellez-Nieves co-owned ABC Daycare in Hermosillo. In the summer of 2009, a fire broke out at the daycare that resulted in the deaths of 49 young children. The daycare building reportedly only had one exit.
A warrant had been issued for Tellez-Nieves in 2009, which was later dismissed. A new warrant was issued several years later and the U.S. Marshals Service said Tellez-Nieves is now facing charges of negligent injury and homicide.
