Coach Brian Kelly said on Monday that quarterback Garrett Nussmeier’s injured abdominal muscles responded well to LSU’s open date.

Nussmeier, Kelly said, did not throw any footballs during the week. Instead, he watched film, rehearsed in-game scenarios on virtual-reality headsets and mimicked his throwing motion with a towel in practice, just so he could work on his mechanics without putting unnecessary strain on his torso.

“He’s feeling better and better,” Kelly said. “We didn’t do a lot with him last week. We wanted to use that as a recovery week for him.”
