The Detroit Red Wings had to pay a price to part with Jake Walman during the 2024 offseason. It pales in comparison to the price the Edmonton Oilers paid Monday to keep Walman.

The Oilers signed the 29-year-old defenseman to a seven-year extension with an average annual value of $7 million.

The Oilers acquired Walman from San Jose at the March trade deadline for a first-round pick. He tallied a goal and seven assists in 15 regular season games and added two goals and eight assists in 22 playoff games.

Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman dealt Walman to San Jose on June 25, 2024, and needed to attach a second-round pick to get the Sharks to assume the full value of his contract ($3.4 million).
