A 77-year-old woman is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in downtown Montreal on Monday morning.

Montreal police spokesperson Raphaël Bergeron said the incident happened around 10:30 a.m. when a driver heading east on René-Lévesque Blvd. made a right turn onto Atwater Ave. and hit the pedestrian.

“She was rushed to hospital in a critical state with serious injuries,” Bergeron said. The woman is undergoing surgery.

Initially, the driver did not seem to realize he had hit the pedestrian until a bystander waved him down to stop, according to Bergeron, adding that the driver did not appear to have committed any criminal offence.

An investigation is now underway.
