Brian Walshe’s murder trial will be delayed while the defendant undergoes an evaluation determining his competence to stand trial, a Norfolk Superior Court judge ordered Monday.

Walshe, 49, will be hospitalized in Bridgewater State Hospital for 20 days to determine whether the alleged murderer is competent to stand trial, according to Judge Diane Freniere’s order in court records.

The Cohasset defendant has pleaded not guilty to murdering and dismembering his wife, Ana Walshe, in the early hours of Jan. 1, 2023.

The murder trial was scheduled to begin on Oct. 20 and will be rescheduled for a later date, court records show. A final pre-trial conference intended to take place Tuesday morning has also been rescheduled.
