WILSONVILLE Ore. (KPTV) - Boys volleyball was voted in as the newest state-sanctioned high school sport on Monday, according to the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA).

The sport becomes the first to be added though the OSAA’s “emerging activity” process - a two-year window where an activity can be eligible to become an officially-sanctioned sport, if it is played at 50 schools by the end of the two-year period - according to the OSAA.

According to the OSAA, 68 varsity teams suited up for boys volleyball in Oregon this spring. The American Volleyball Coaches’ Association (AVCA) says the sport has seen a 51% growth nationally over the past six years.

In addition to the boys volleyball vote, the OSAA denied a motion Monday to approve boys and girls lacrosse as an emerging activity
