GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Riverfront property in Grand Rapids that used to be the Naval and Marine Corps Center, which has been vacant for about five years, could soon have a new owner.

The city of Grand Rapids is working to buy 1863 Monroe Ave. NW — a 3.5-acre property south of Riverside Park — from the federal government for redevelopment.

Neighbors like Steph Martin are looking forward to what the site could become.

“It’s not fun to look at, but I’ve always been curious what they would do with it,” Martin said. “It’s really exciting for me that that city is thinking about purchasing the property and making some updates for the community.”

The city’s economic development office is accepting development proposals through Oct. 17.
