GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Since October is domestic violence awareness month, a nonprofit is hosting a vigil event Monday night called “Their Light Lives On.”

The event, put on by The Domestic Violence Action Network of Kent County, will start at the Eberhard Center, where the community is invited to hear poems and spoken word from survivors. Then the group will proceed to the Blue Bridge, where a memorial is set to honor the lives lost to domestic violence in our state.

“They may be in your families, they may go to your churches, they go to your schools. It's all around us,” explained Micah Johnston, director of Domestic Violence Action Network of Kent County.

Abuse at the hand of a loved one is hardly a rare occurrence.
