In light of National Fire Prevention Week, New Haven officials want to make sure families are prepared with the proper resources and tips.
In a press conference, Mayor Justin Elicker was joined by Fire Chief John Alston, Assistant Fire Chief Shakira Samuel, Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Coughlin and Acting Supervisor of Fire Investigations Tomas Reyes to review some easy ways to keep residents safe in their homes.

Elicker reminded the public that smoke detectors are not only a resource, but are required by law.
"You are required to have in or near every bedroom or sleeping area a smoke alarm, in basements and attics, in common areas for multifamily dwellings,” Elicker said.
