CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - There is a centuries-old game that is clacking its way into the hearts and homes of Charlotteans. Mahjong is experiencing a renewed popularity in Charlotte, with lessons and game nights.

One of those game nights happened on a Thursday night in September in the Eastover neighborhood of Charlotte, where Allison Merriman swiftly dressed tables for a game night at Summit Coffee on Providence Road. The only pause in her movement comes from the satisfying clatter of game tiles hitting the table.

“Mahjong definitely has this stigma of being, yeah, like a country club game, something only a small group of people really partake in, and I don’t see any reason why that should be the case,” said Merriman.
