OXFORD, Ala. (WIAT) --The Oxford Fire Department is giving out free smoke detectors for National Fire Prevention Week.

“Rate of death drops 51% for a home with a working smoke alarm,” said OFD Cpt. Jonathan Roberts.

Smoke detectors, however, were not working in a majority of Oxford house fires. That leads to injury and in many cases death, Roberts said.

The OFD will go door-to-door in the following areas through Wednesday: • Pace Street • Deerfield Circle • Knoxville Circle

While locations are chosen randomly each year, there is some rhyme and reason to areas of focus.

“A lot of times the mobile park homes are big hit, older houses, older communities and any areas with a lot of children,” Roberts said.
