HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Hilo judge granted supervised release for a man accused of a fatal hit-and-run and driving under the influence.

Dallas Brooks, 30, made his initial appearance in Hilo Circuit Court Monday afternoon after being indicted Thursday, Oct. 2, on charges of first-degree negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.

Court documents showed Brooks’ license was also suspended.

On May 16, Brooks allegedly struck and killed Maxwell Robertson Sherwood, 21, near the intersection of 36th Avenue and Orchidland Drive.

Police initially arrested Brooks, then released him pending investigation. He was re-arrested on a $100,000 indictment warrant.

In court Monday, Brooks pleaded not guilty.

He is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 21, 2026.
