John Turnbull has had a tough few years with several deaths in his family, including his wife Sue two years ago.
And now he is facing the prospect of losing the home that Sue designed and loved to make way for the $940 million Milton-Ulladulla bypass - despite Transport for NSW setting aside a large tract of land behind his property many years ago as a bypass corridor.
"They've got all this ground and they're not going to use it," Mr Turnbull said.
He said the bypass corridor was on the plan when he bought his 5.5 hectare (12 acre) block in the 1990s after the land originally owned by his grandfather was subdivided by his mother.
He did not even mind the bypass taking out part of a corner of his land, which was part of the original plan.
