WESTLAKE, Ohio — A crossing guard for Westlake City Schools has died after he was struck by a vehicle last month while working at an intersection, police say.

Joe Lazar had been a crossing guard for Westlake Schools since December 2019. He was struck by a vehicle on Sept. 11 at the intersection of Hilliard Boulevard and Dover Center Road. No one else was injured in the incident.

Police say they learned of Lazar’s death Friday.

“Joe was a regular visitor at the police station before and after his shifts,” police say in a social media post . “He was a good man who was very proud to give back to his community. He will be missed by all who knew him at the WPD. ...

“Rest in Peace Joe. Thank you for your service.”
