A busy highway was thrown into chaos after an air ambulance helicopter flipped over and crashed, leaving a woman trapped under the wreckage and three other people seriously injured. ‌

The helicopter was returning delivering a patient to hospital when it encountered an 'in-air emergency' just after 7pm on Monday, reports the Mirror . ‌

Captain Justin Sylvia, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Fire Department , revealed the pilot, nurse and paramedic were rushed to hospital in critical condition. ‌

He also said it was "mind blowing" no one else on the busy eastbound Highway 5 was injured, given the aircraft crash-landed in the middle of the road.
