BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The largest known earthquake to hit the Adirondacks happened on this day in 1983, and Channel 3’s Jack Laduke had the story.

“Seismologists say the Adirondack Mountains are under high geological stress. Faults in the mountains periodically reactivate, and that’s probably what caused today’s earthquake,” reported Laduke.

The magnitude 5.3 quake centered in Newcomb and rumbled through the mountains at 6:19 a.m.

Local authorities received plenty of calls from shaken residents, but no reports of damage or injuries.

Also on this day in history, a big step toward modern air travel was taken in Vermont.
