Iberville Parish residents reacted with shock and grief Tuesday morning as word spread of a shooting at the parish courthouse that left one sheriff's deputy and a suspect dead and another deputy seriously wounded.

The deputies, Charles Riley and Brett Stassi Jr. , who is the son of Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi, were attempting to arrest the suspect when the altercation began, 18th Judicial District Attorney Tony Clayton said.

Riley died from his injuries. As of Monday night, Stassi Jr.'s condition appeared "to be optimistic," according to Clayton.

"Our deepest condolences are with the family of the deputy we lost, and we are especially lifting Sheriff Stassi, his son, and their family in our prayers as they face this unimaginable time," Iberville Parish President Chris Daigl
