GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Grand Rapids police Chief Eric Winstrom is calling for community help after a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed during a memorial service for another teen killed in 2024.
“To have two teens killed in the same spot in less than two years, it’s shocking,” Winstrom said.
The shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 near Umatilla Street SE and Madison Avenue.
Winstrom said as many as 75 rounds were fired in what likely was an altercation between two groups. There was no evidence the 17-year-old was armed and Winstrom said it’s believed he was a “true victim.”
The teen was there Saturday because of a memorial for 15-year-old Amillier ‘Milli’ Penn, who was shot and killed June 2, 2024.
The memorial was to honor Amillier’s birthday.
