LIBERTY, Mo. -- The trial of Joshua Rocha, the man convicted of first-degree murder for the killing of North Kansas City Police Officer Daniel Vasquez, is nearing the end.

Closing arguments wrapped up Tuesday, and the jury was dismissed to begin its deliberations at about 10:30 a.m.

Jurors must now decide whether Rocha should be sentenced to death for the murder of Officer Vasquez—or life in prison.

The jury must decide if the mitigating circumstances outweigh the statutory aggravating circumstances. If so, Rocha will receive a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The state gave its closing argument first.

“Our choices define us,” one of the prosecutors said in court Tuesday. “There are consequences for what you choose to do.”
