Early Tuesday morning, a Springville High School student called the city’s police department claiming she was in distress and had a handgun in her backpack.
According to the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office, the Springville Police was contacted by the student around 7:13 a.m. Law enforcement made contact with the female and secured the handgun.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the school system is working closely with local law enforcement to investigate,” St. Clair County Schools Superintendent Rusty St. John said in a statement.
“There is no threat to students or staff, and school operations will resume as normal," he added
The female is currently being transported to Children's Hospital.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
