Over the last several years, the Emporia Police Department has adopted the targeted usage of drones in emergency and non-emergency situations. The drones were most recently used during a narcotics investigation on State street, to arrest Christopher Diaz on counts of Distribution of a Controlled Substance and No Drug Tax Stamp.

The Gazette sat down with Ray Mattas, Support Services Captain, and Dominick Vortherms, Drone Teams Captain, to learn more about the drone team and its usage.

What is the Drone Team?

The drone team is made up of six drones and eight licensed drone operators. Four drones are smaller, interior drones meant for smaller spaces and faster flying. Two larger drones can operate at high speeds and survey larger areas. All drone operators are required to receive a license
