PHOENIX — The City of Phoenix is offering residents a free opportunity to safely dispose of used batteries during Fire Prevention Week, with a drive-up collection event scheduled Thursday at Steele Indian School Park.

The event runs from 3 to 6 p.m. at the park, located at the intersection of North Central Avenue and Farrington Drive. Residents can drop off lithium-ion (rechargeable batteries), alkaline (AA, AAA, etc.) and Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries without leaving their vehicles.

Batteries are considered household hazardous waste and should never go in residential trash or recycling containers.

Each resident is allowed to dispose of up to 5 pounds of batteries. Car batteries are not accepted.
