SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — A medical school at the University of Rhode Island (URI) is one step closer to becoming a reality.
Consulting firm Tripp Umbach released the results of its independent feasibility study that looked into the prospect of creating a medical school in South Kingstown.
In the study's executive summary, the firm said, "URI is well-positioned to respond to Rhode Island's pressing shortage of primary care physicians by establishing a public, M.D. School of Medicine."
The study was ordered by a Senate commission established to try and address issues relating to healthcare workers and the state's trouble retaining primary care physicians.
