Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has survived an attack on his motorcade by hundreds of protesters who were filmed throwing large rocks at his vehicle, in what a top government minister has labelled as an attempted assassination.

The South American country's Environment and Energy Minister Ines Manzano filed a formal report of an assassination attempt on the president on Tuesday local time and said five people had been detained after Mr Noboa's motorcade was surrounded by about 500 protesters in the regional city of El Tambo, in the Cañar province.

Ms Manzano also claimed that the president's vehicle had signs of bullet damage after the incident, although Reuters could not independently verify whether a bullet was fired at the president's car during the protest.
