WISCASSET, Maine — Thirty years after the Maine Yankee nuclear power plant closed, pioneers of the latest technology infrastructure projects, data centers, are looking at Wiscasset—and residents are not happy.
A site assessor for an unknown company is scoping out 300 acres of town-owned land next to the defunct power plant, gauging the possibility of a data center. Town officials say talks are in very early stages; however, residents in Wiscasset and neighboring towns are already raising the alarm.
According to Aaron Chrostowsky, Wiscasset’s economic development director, a company first approached the town at the beginning of 2025 to look at the plot of forested town-owned land across Old Ferry Road from the remains of Maine Yankee.
