LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has signed into law a new 24% tax on marijuana to create new revenue that will help fund long-promised major road repairs. The new wholesale tax will be levied on the sale of marijuana from producers to retailers. Analysts predict the new tax will raise retail prices. Buyers of recreational marijuana already pay a 10% retail excise tax and a 6% sales tax. While the cannabis industry is decrying the move, lawmakers and Whitmer are celebrating the deal that came after months of negotiations. Whitmer, a Democrat, spent two campaigns promising to “fix the damn roads.” The slogan became a fixture of her tenure.
