BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - It’s not every day you get a glimpse into what breast cancer genetic testing looks like. As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, WCAX reporter Sophia Thomas visited her doctor to learn about her own genetic risks.
“Mom has this BRCA1 -- 50/50 chance that you could’ve inherited it,” said Wendy McKinnon a genetic counselor at the UVM Medical Center.
McKinnon has my family tree in her lap, but it’s not the kind that connects relatives. This tree illustrates my family’s cancer history. Breast cancer is my family’s biggest threat. My mother and several aunts survived it.
I visited UVM Medical Center to see if I carry the same mutation that puts them at higher risk.
