GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A series of showers has helped firefighters get a northern Michigan wildfire under control.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the Benzie Road Fire in the Roscommon State Forest Area is now approximately 95% contained.
The fire broke out sometime early Sunday afternoon near Old U.S. Highway 27 near the Clare-Roscommon county line. By Monday, more than 85 acres had been damaged.
The area received about a half inch of rain overnight heading into Tuesday, which did a lot to quell the fire. The DNR says they are using drones with thermal imaging capabilities to find hot spots among the marshy area.
“It has been a good effort with some tough conditions Sunday and Monday,” DNR resources protection manager Jeff Vasher said in a news release.
