NEEDHAM, Mass. —

An ocean storm will develop off the Georgia and Carolina coast Saturday and then drift northward, possibly moving close enough to New England to bring strong winds and rain to the area for part of the holiday weekend.

"With high pressure to our north (and the storm to the south), in between, there is going to be a pretty decent easterly fetch, so coastal flooding is possible, beach erosion is possible," StormTeam 5 chief meteorologist Cindy Fitzgibbon said.

If the storm gets close enough, the northern edge of its rain may clip southern New England.

The storm may move very slowly once it arrives later Sunday.

"This may continue into early next week," Fitzgibbon said.
