TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Indiana State Police are alerting the public about a phone scam that is claiming to be a local or national agency.
According to a press release from state police, this phone scam is set up to steal money in the form of gift cards. The scammers may also threaten to come to the home of the person receiving the scam call and cause them harm.
State police add that the caller may try to pose as a government agency or one of your family members.
"If you receive a call from a number you don't recognize, don't answer," said Indiana State Police (ISP). "If it's someone that needs you, they will leave a voicemail. If in doubt, call the local agency or family member back to verify the call or voicemail."
