As the Pennsylvania House considers how to wield its power to influence public health discourse, a committee discussion on menopause and perimenopause produced starkly different approaches to women’s health.

A resolution from Rep. Melissa Shusterman, D-Paoli, which passed the House Health Committee, 16-10, would direct the Joint State Government Commission to “conduct a study and issue a report on workplace policies related to perimenopause and menopause offered by public and private employers.

“Perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms may contribute to women missing work and estimates show that productivity losses and health expenses for employees who are experiencing symptoms amount to almost $26.6 billion a year for the U.S. economy,” wrote Ms. Shusterman in the resolution’s sponsorship
