BURLINGTON, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - The Burlington Electric Department on Wednesday warned its customers of a "sudden surge" of scam calls.
According to officials, scammers claim to be from the department and threaten customers to pay their bill, saying that their power may be cut off within 30 minutes.
Customers may be directed to call a separate number and asked for personal or financial information, say officials.
"Please be advised that this is a scam. BED never would treat its customers in this manner," wrote the department.
The Burlington Electric Department does not have an 800 number. Their real customer service number is (802) 865-7300.
