CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department introduced a new initiative on Wednesday, designed to reduce criminal activity Uptown and help people feel safer.

Charlotte police said its CROWN initiative will put more officers Uptown who will more strictly enforce crimes like aggressive panhandling, disorderly conduct, and public intoxication.

The announcement was made at a news conference with the Center City Public Safety Task Force, which was formed in July and comprises law enforcement, public officials, business leaders, and advocates for the homeless and those with mental health issues.

“I’m concerned that our community has inadvertently relaxed our standards for public safety,” said Michael Smith, President of Charlotte City Center Partners.
