WASHINGTON (KELO) -- 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, and a group of Vietnam vets were honored on the latest Midwest Honor Flight.

It is a day of remembrance for more than 80 veterans in our nation's capital as part of Midwest Honor Flight's 28th mission. Going from one memorial to the next, they remembered those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Daniel Lapka of Eureka, SD is a Vietnam era veteran who spent 18 months in Guam. He was involved in 32 rescue missions as part of the Navy.

"It was always good to be able to get someone and get them safe," Lapka said.

Bill Rhode of Rapid City served in the Army and was in Vietnam for a year. For him, interacting with other veterans is humbling.
