MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Funding for deafblind kids and young adults in Wisconsin was secured after a cut in federal dollars, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction said Wednesday.

DPI called the move to end federal funding for the Wisconsin Deafblind Technical Assistance Project “unexpected and sudden.”

The program serves 170 students from birth to 21 who are both deaf and blind, DPI said.

State education officials said the grant was in the middle of a five-year cycle totaling over $550,000 and expected to continue through September 2028. The U.S. Department of Education said the program conflicted with the priority and policies of the current administration.

DPI turned to the National Center on Deafblindness and secured a grant to prevent the disruption of services.
