SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) – A mother watched her son, an aspiring pro boxer, take a turn for the worse during a bout in Saginaw Saturday night.

22-year-old Tyrone Welch died not long after the fight. Now his mom wants to see more done to protect boxers entering the ring at the Gideon Boxing Gym.

Shirley Welch has called the last couple of days restless with very little sleep.

Welch said Tyrone appeared extremely tired towards the end of the second round, absorbing punches and not sending any back. She said the fight was stopped and he was helped out of the ring, gasping for air.

“I think they should have stopped it when he went up against the ring and motioned with his hand, like, he couldn’t go no more,” said Welch.

Welch said Tyrone lost consciousness after a few minutes and she called
