YORK, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- An inmate at the York County Detention Center died Wednesday afternoon, the sheriff’s office reported.

Detention officers say shortly after 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8, the jail staff found the inmate, a 45-year-old male, unresponsive in his cell. Officers immediately began life-saving measures.

Once EMS arrived, they continued life-saving measures, but were unable to save him. He was pronounced dead at 6:18 p.m.

Per YCSO policy, the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has been called to investigate the death.

The inmate had been at the detention center since Aug. 12, for four failure to appear charges related to possession with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine, possession of narcotics third offense, as well as a violation of probation.
