SEATTLE — The Seattle Public Schools (SPS) Board of Education rejected a pilot program to reinstate school resource officers at Garfield High.

The amendment to district policy would have cleared the way for a single officer to be placed at Garfield for a one-year trial run. The board voted 5-2 against the plan.

SPS has not allowed school resource officers since the height of George Floyd protests in 2020.

District 5 board director Michelle Sarju sounded off before casting her vote.

"I cannot vote yes on this total package. The trust has been ruined... You all have broken my trust over and over and over again," she said.

Sarju cited racial disparities.

According to SPS data , 27% of the total enrollment at Garfield High School is Black.
