Andrew Cuomo is shifting his stance on the city’s plan to close Rikers Island, saying it’s time to abandon the current approach and keep jail facilities on the island.

“This is just recognizing reality, it’s not working,” Cuomo said.

The former governor and current mayoral candidate argued Wednesday that the city’s plan to replace Rikers with four new borough-based jails has faltered.

“The new plan, not only years late, billions over budget. It can’t satisfy the capacity of Rikers,” Cuomo said.

The city is legally required to close the Rikers Island jail complex by 2027.

Construction is already underway on four new jails across the city to replace it.
