Across New York City, Catholic schools have struggled to maintain enrollment, forcing some to close their doors for good.

“I’ve been to three schools that have closed,” said senior Darian Victoria.

Victoria began his senior year this fall at La Salle Academy on the Lower East Side after his former high school, All Hallows in the Bronx, closed following his junior year.

“I would say it's a learning lesson instead of looking down on it,” he said. “It taught me how to become adaptable.”

For La Salle Academy — a 177-year-old, all-boys Catholic high school — those closures serve as a lesson as well. Like many parochial schools, La Salle has faced declining enrollment in recent years. But that trend began to shift this year, with a 60% increase in the size of the freshman class.
