A student stabbed a classmate at a Detroit school on Wednesday with a knife she got from her mother, officials said.

The victim was last reported to be in stable condition, the Detroit Public Schools Community District said in a statement. Both the alleged assailant and the mother were arrested, the district said.

Officials said the incident happened at Gompers Elementary-Middle School on Burt Road near Evergreen Road and Lyndon Street.

"A student was stabbed by a fellow student after their mother gave a small knife to their child in school," the statement read.

The parent entered the school, went through its metal detectors, which sounded, but the security guard on duty failed to search the woman, according to the district.
