BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) - Zebra mussels, small invasive shellfish native to Eurasia, are known for rapidly colonizing freshwater systems and damaging infrastructure, ecosystems and recreational areas. Their presence in Smishek Lake was confirmed earlier this year, prompting state officials to take action.
The North Dakota Game and Fish Department will begin treating the lake next week with EarthTecQZ, a copper-based molluscicide, in an effort to eradicate the mussels and prevent their spread to other water bodies, including Lake Sakakawea.
